Carlette's passion and dedication for serving youth led her to positions such as Rights of Passage program coordinator, chief operating officer, and, at Covenant House Washington, director of external affairs. In 2017, Carlette served as interim executive director of Covenant House Illinois, helping to establish Covenant House’s then newest site, in Chicago. Prior to joining Covenant House International in February 2023, Bill served as the CEO of Covenant House California since 2014, leading the site to quadruple in size in those eight years.

He was succeeded by Sister Mary Rose McGeady, D.C., who served from 1990 to 2003. Patricia A. Cruise resigned her position as president of Covenant House International in 2008. Kevin Ryan, formerly the Child Advocate of New Jersey, became president in 2009, and retired from the position on February 12, 2023. William “Bill” Bedrossian, former CEO of Covenant House California, became CEO & president of Covenant House International on February 13, 2023. Our doors are open to youth and staff regardless of their race, religion and sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

Covenant House provides the stability and structure necessary to build a positive future. If you or someone you know is a runaway, homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, call the National Runaway Safeline or visit their website. Throughout the late 1970s, Covenant House expanded its social service programs in New York City and began to branch out to other cities in 1980. And, we urge our partners, vendors, and supporters to make the same commitment.

We offer them a welcoming and safe environment based on absolute respect, unconditional love, and relentless support, where we believe in and encourage their resilience. Each year, millions of young people across the countries where we operate face a period of homelessness. Our services and programs help those youth overcome the harsh experience of being unhoused.

Sign-up for a monthly donation of $26.53 or more to become a Youth Champion! Your monthly gift will provide shelter, meals, and vital programs that will help youth experiencing homelessness and trafficking. Lend your voice and advocate for the rights of youth facing homelessness and survivors of trafficking. Young people experiencing homelessness face complex stress and trauma in their everyday efforts to survive. We offer counseling, traditional talk therapy, and other wellness programs such as yoga, art and music therapy, religious and spiritual services, and physical fitness.

A report later prepared for Covenant House counted a total of 15 reported cases of sexual acts between Ritter and youth and young adults who were living or volunteering at the shelter. In the late 1960s, the Reverend Bruce Ritter, a Franciscan priest, retired from his job as a professor at Manhattan College to begin a new ministry serving the city's poor. Joined by colleague Father James Fitzgibbon, he moved into a dilapidated tenement building in New York City's East Village.

We are committed to providing unconditional love, absolute respect, and relentless support for each young person who walks through our doors. Your Support is the bridge from homelessness to hope – meeting basic needs such as housing, food, physical & mental health care! Your support also enables CHC to provide youth with life skills, career and education support – providing youth overcoming homelessness with the best chance for success in independence. We serve young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness or human trafficking with absolute respect and unconditional love. Our ultimate goal is to help each young person move on with their life in positive ways with counseling, education, stable employment, and secure housing.

This year Covenant House California provided 83,329 nights of housing for young people experiencing homelessness in California. Our job training, education and life skills programs help young people transition to independence. Through it all, Covenant House is guided by the principles of offering every young person unconditional love and absolute respect. People of color experience homelessness at higher rates, largely due to long-standing structural racism that impacts education, housing, and other inequities.

Ways To Support Our Homeless Youth

covenant house

When you give to Covenant House, you make it possible for us to fight human trafficking and relentlessly support young people facing homelessness. There are many ways you can donate to help young people get back on their feet and onto their next chapters. Covenant House immediately meets the basic needs of youth experiencing homelessness through a nourishing meal, a shower, clean clothes, medical attention, and a safe place to sleep. In Hollywood, CHC’s Safe Haven shelter immediately provides for youths’ basic human needs and urgent medical care. Young people receive a nutritious meal, take a shower with new personal care products, receive new clothes, and sleep in a warm, safe bed. We acknowledge the bravery it takes for young people to walk through our doors.

For just $19 per month, you can provide meals, shelter and love to youth who sleep at a Covenant House each night. Every day, youth across Canada struggle with homelessness and sex trafficking. Our Donor Care team is available to answer any general inquiries about Covenant House programs, policies, donations, and our fundraising work. Without equitable resources, they can get swept up in a vicious cycle of hardship and significant social disadvantages. "The day I walked into the Covenant House crisis shelter in Philadelphia, I’ll never forgot how scared I was and how the staff made me feel so welcomed right away."

We believe that no young person deserves to be homeless; that every young person in California deserves shelter, food, clothing, education … and most importantly, to be loved. CHC provides a full continuum of services to meet the physical, emotional, educational, vocational, and spiritual well-being of young people, in order to provide them with the best chance for success in independence. Covenant House California (CHC) is a non-profit youth shelter that provides sanctuary and support for youth experiencing homelessness, ages 18-24. Covenant House New York’s mission is to help each young person find safety and refuge from the dangers of living on the streets. Be a champion for youth facing homelessness by creating your own fundraising campaign.

Gaps in Foster Care

As the largest provider of runaway and homeless youth services in New York City, CHNY serves over 1,600 young adult ages annually with an operating budget of over 30 million dollars. Our doors are open to all young people who need help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. We facilitate our services using trauma-informed principles to help homeless youth leave the streets and achieve independence. We also advocate for systemic change through public policy while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness.

Bill’s passion for working with youth came from his parents, who have been foster parents for over 30 years and have adopted 8 of his 11 siblings through the child welfare system. We value authentic relationships, honor the voice of our youth, and model caring relationships based on trust, respect, and honesty. The reasons behind homelessness are multifaceted, and the most at-risk individuals within our communities are often the most vulnerable youths. As many as 4.2 million young people will experience a period of homelessness this year in the U.S. alone.

Choose a life-changing item from our catalog and ensure our young people have what they need to thrive. By selecting a gift through this catalog, you are contributing immediate resources to Covenant House. Nearly half of all young people who experience homelessness do so more than once.

Together, the Covenant House community is fighting to achieve a world where every young person has access to safe housing, support, healing, and opportunity. When young people age out of foster care and other child welfare services, they become susceptible to homelessness, human trafficking, and other threats to their well-being.

Now, as an established nonprofit organization, Covenant House began to fundraise to shelter youth facing homelessness in Lower Manhattan and on Staten Island. In 1976, Father Ritter announced plans to create a multi-service center near the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Covenant House then acquired a group of buildings on West 44th Street and moved its administrative offices to the new location, which moved into a retrofitted cluster of buildings on West 41st Street in 1979. Covenant House empowers young people to overcome homelessness and trafficking by providing them with safe housing, food and clothing, and relentless support.

We provided more than 790,000 nights of safe housing to young people in the past year. We provide a range of shelter and housing options to meet the needs of each young person. Our initiatives in prevention and early intervention work to raise awareness and better protect youth. In 2021, over 4.2 million young people experienced homelessness of some kind.

Do you want a more accurate quotation and evaluation of your project feasibility? Please, contact us to make conceptualization, design, production, storage, and distribution easier for you. We can guide you at Martin's in answering these questions and thus reduce the production cost of your project. So, if you’re looking for the right supplier or a new one to increase your sales through attractive original plastic designs for houseware, toys, or promotional products to position your brand and impact the market, keep reading.

The Dezeen guide to plastic in architecture, design and interiors

Recommended boss wall thickness is 0.6 times of nominal wall thickness of the plastic part. Product designers design boss features in plastic parts to receive screws, threaded inserts, or guide other parts. Depending on the different types of manufacturing processes, there are set guidelines for DFM practices that define various tolerances, rules, and manufacturing checks related to DFM.

Building custom molds and manufacturing plastic components since 1953

This helps to make plastics more affordable than most other materials and sees them used to create millions of tonnes of single-use items every year. Our latest Dezeen guide includes more than 11 types of plastic commonly used in architecture, design and interiors, with links to hundreds of projects for inspiration. This stage is so crucial that the manufacturing cost can increase by 40% if the assembly of the product is not considered. It can also be interesting to think about what these colors and shapes were in their previous life as trash. But the important thing is that the materials and process in creating Debris is fully sustainable and it can be disposed of properly when you no longer need it. And hopefully, you get to think about what you’re doing to help preserve marine life and keep places like beaches a safe haven for all.

What does DFMA - Design for Manufacturing and Assembly - mean?

As an innovative and eco-friendly company, Martin's proudly includes poliagave amongst its range of materials. In the junior year, you will take intermediate level courses and hands-on laboratories in polymer materials, processing and design (including the design and manufacturing of an injection mold). During your senior year, you choose among advanced courses and a student-selected capstone project.

Most bosses, ribs, and posts formed by blind holes or pockets should taper thinner as they extend into the mould. Surfaces formed by slides won't need a draft angle if the mould separates from the surface before ejection. Incorporating angles or tapers on product features like walls, ribs, posts, and managers that lie parallel to the direction of the discharge from the mold can ease the ejection of part. The type of draft required is determined by how the features of a part are formed in a mould. If the mould separates from the surface before ejection, surfaces formed by slides may not require a draft. Consider incorporating draft angles on product features such as walls, ribs, posts, and bosses that run along the direction of release from the mould, thereby facilitating part ejection.

Incorrect material specifications will lead to premature product failure, product liability, or expensive product recalls. IDS has extensive experience selecting materials based on a wide range of application requirements. Some applications require materials with excellent chemical resistance; others require exceptional impact strength, high-temperature resistance, or flame retardancy. It’s critical for your design firm to comprehensively analyze your specific application requirements and identify crucial performance requirements for the plastic material.

Consideration of those elements is prime for integrating engineering and manufacturing expertise to catch mistakes, see opportunities for efficiencies and price reduction, and even assess the viability of contract requirements. Typically, your injection molder will conduct an in-depth analysis of those elements together with your team well before the tooling process is initiated. DFM isn't a “stand-alone” guideline or principle when it involves manufacturing plastic injection molded products.

These two factors interrelate with each other, and knowledge of each area is important to achieve a comprehensive design. For plastic design, there are specific rules regarding part geometry, which supports in achieving the intended embodiment. This month's Dezeen In Depth newsletter delves into the debate surrounding the future of plastics and features an exclusive interview with interior designer Kelly Wearstler. The Plastic Design engineering team can take a product from concept to completion; this includes design, engineering, component selection, testing, and validation.

Since 1986 Product Design Development serviced the plastic forming industry.

UndercutsUndercuts can be thought of as any indentation, protrusion, or hole that prohibits the injection mold from opening and ejecting the part in a linear motion. Undercuts often add significant cost to the mold as well as increased lead times. Now, the cost of manufacturing depends on the customer's business strategy and its economic potential. Still, as usual, the quote for the manufacture of a plastic design is multi-factorial.

Injection moulding with thin walls can produce walls as thin as 0.5mm (0.020"). Work with an experienced injection moulder and design engineer to ensure that the proper wall thicknesses are used for the design and material selection of your part. After the 3D product design, the company hired proceeds to the manufacture of prototypes. A dedicated mold is required for each component to be manufactured by injection molding.

The purpose of using ribs is that they increase the strength of an element without increasing the thickness of its walls. With less material required, ribs will be an economical solution for added strength. For increased stiffness, increase the amount of ribs instead of increasing height and space a minimum of double the nominal wall thickness except each other.

What Is the Waffle House Index? The True Story From the Man Who Created It, Craig Fugate

waffle house index

Servers nudged customers to order sausage instead of bacon, because four sausage patties fit on the grill for every two slices of bacon. By this time, surrounding counties were requesting state aid from Fugate to help with recovery efforts. He and his team had begun monitoring indicators like school closures, power outages and search-and-rescue operations to determine what areas were in the most immediate need. They provided a color-coded map of the area to give local agencies and the public a better perspective as to where the severity of damage was located and where the state would begin administering help first. As the man who once ran Florida's Division of Emergency Management, Fugate's job took him to southwest Florida in 2004 to survey the destruction left by Hurricane Charley. The Category 4 storm made landfall near Fort Myers, causing catastrophic damage for a storm that was relatively small in size compared to other hurricanes.

The 'Waffle House Index' is an unofficial gauge for hurricane impact. Here's what it is

FEMA doesn’t publish it anywhere; no one, except for Waffle House itself, counts how many restaurants are running lean or forced to close. But the company does give that count to the agency, and FEMA uses it — along with wind speeds and power outages and other objective measures — to judge a storm’s impact, and to figure out where its own crews and other emergency responders can get fed. Waffle House officials caution that residents should pay close attention to their local leaders and evacuate based on those recommendations.

Primary Menu

(In the next few days, as the storm churned up the coast and flooded North Carolina, it would close 98 all told.) And as soon as the announcement went out, media tracking the storm, and customers on social media, invoked the closings as a sign of the apocalypse. This 2016 story followed a team of Waffle House operations analysts as they decided whether to close any of the chain’s locations in preparation for Hurricane Matthew, a Category 5 storm that ended up affecting the Florida coast as a Category 2 storm. The notion that FEMA bases its disaster assessments entirely on the impact on Waffle House locations appeared to originate with that article. However, the context indicated that Waffle House was one of several large chains observed by FEMA to assess how badly affected an area's operations might be after a national disaster.

Joplin's water system had been damaged so badly that there was no water pressure, leaving the entire city's residents and businesses without running water. The power of a passionate fan base has rarely been more visible. The term was coined in 2004 by Craig Fugate, who was the Florida Emergency Management director at the time during Hurricane Charley.

waffle house index

In fact, a measurement tool called the Waffle House Index can be used to analyze a storm’s severity and the effect it can have on communities. Its classifications of green, yellow, and red indicate how severe a storm is based on how well Waffle House can operate during it. The term was coined by former FEMA administrator Craig Fugate following the Joplin tornado in May 2011. The storm, which caused over $2.8 billion in damage and 158 casualties, was not enough to close down either of the Waffle House locations in Joplin. The breakfast chain remained open throughout the storm, with a prepared limited menu that allowed it to serve food even during power outages.

The chain’s locations would normally stay open even in severe conditions to help first responders. The well-known restaurant chain currently has 10 locations closed in the hardest hit areas of Florida, a number that will "fluctuate rapidly" as staff works to re-open and aid community members, Waffle House spokesperson Njeri Boss tells CNBC Make It. Fugate and his crew determined that if you got to the interstate and the Waffle House was up and running, it's most likely not the most impacted area. "Well, my guys slipped in an image about the Waffle House Index," Fugate said. "By now, we had figured out where the Waffle Houses were closed, which had no power or limited menus, and which ones were open. If they weren't closed and had a full menu, you were moving well into recovery operations and it was much more stable."

Every Waffle House employee gets a key fob with lists of relevant phone numbers. Local managers keep track of who has challenging home situations — disabled parents, children with special needs, single heads of household — and might need extra help. Every location has a wall-mounted “crisis response” flier that includes detachable wallet cards listing personal-preparedness steps for hurricanes, tornadoes and ice storms.

How Waffle House Helps Measure the Severity of a Natural Disaster

As Hurricane Ian pummeled Florida's western coast on September 28, 2022, news broke that streets were flooded, houses had been swept away, and Waffle Houses were closing. The last detail seems like an odd thing to focus on—but it’s actually a sign of dire situations. "We do have closures in mandatory evacuation zones and locations within low-lying areas that are subject to severe flooding," Waffle House Vice President of Public Relations Njeri Boss told USA TODAY last year. The Waffle House Index can indicate how quickly a community is going to recover after a hurricane. All jokes aside, the Waffle House Index is a very real barometer that is unofficially used by state, local and federal governments to gauge the magnitude of disasters throughout the Southeast. Currently, the 10 closed Florida locations include two in Naples, a few in Port Charlotte and several in Fort Myers, Boss says.

When do Waffle House restaurants close?

If the test is to be believed, Hurricane Irma promises to pack a bigger wallop than Hurricane Harvey. Pat Warner, spokesman for Waffle House, said 40 Waffle Houses around Houston were affected by Harvey. The company expects about 250 restaurants to feel the impact from Irma. It's called the Waffle House Index, or test, which uses the operating conditions of the resilient Southern restaurants as a barometer for how well an area will recover from a hurricane, tornado or other hazard.

Notably, grocery stores are often the first place people look to go when starting their recovery; they can provide much needed supplies like batteries, water, and food. All kinds of companies have come to the aid of communities impacted by the recent storms and in a variety of ways. Some companies, like Target and Lowe’s have donated money to trusted organizations while others, like Clorox and Walmart have provided much-needed supplies to hard-hit areas. That’s why, after disasters like Harvey and Irma strike, companies work to offer as much support as they can.

If you’re looking to donate, monetary donations to trusted organizations are the recommended route to take. Cash donations allow groups flexibility to get the supplies survivors and communities need when they’re needed. With Irma’s destruction having been hot on the heels of Harvey, and Maria yet to make its way through the Caribbean, it’s important for everyone to be involved. While fundraising may work for some, other teams—whether professional like the Florida Panthers or collegiate, like the Michigan State Spartans football team have taken to volunteering to help in their off-time. The index itself isn’t just about whether or not you can get pralines on your waffles or if you can get waffles at all, but rather about the damage in a neighborhood.

The plywood needed to protect windows from storm debris might have been manufactured in China, and a storm in the Gulf of Mexico can force enough interruption on petroleum refining to choke off supply on the other side of the country. The chain also shut down two stores in the St. Petersburg area due to "storm surge and flooding," Boss said. Power went off at the Waffle House just off Interstate 95 in Weldon on Saturday evening as Irene churned through. The restaurant kept serving until it got too dark for the grill cook to see when the food was cooked, then it shut down.

The power had gone out, rendering some of the products in the freezer unusable. The late Anthony Bourdain, of CNN, perhaps had the best description of the diner-like restaurant chain that serves hot meals 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "I know that there are lots of other businesses as well that emergency management will look to," Boss told FOX Weather. If a Waffle House closes before a hurricane, it is a sign that they expect extremely severe weather and that people in the area should also evacuate. The first rule of operating in a disaster, though, is keeping personnel safe.

Resources are dispatched to areas hit hardest by torrential weather. Waffle House had no role in creating the index, but it values the "the goodwill gained from being open when customers are most desperate," its website says. Boss adds that the restaurant chain "takes pride" in always being among the first businesses to reopen once it's safe to enter an area devastated by a disaster. The lights that never seem to dim, even as hurricanes and natural catastrophes bare down on the communities around them. The assistance we’ve seen from people all over the private sector, as well as all over the world, has been astonishing to say the least.

The restaurant chain was first founded in 1975 in Long Beach, California, by Harlem native Herb Hudson. It currently operates eight locations, with its newest location in West LA. "We actually have a storm playbook that every restaurant has. We revise it each year as needed. And it tells the management team what to do in the event of an emergency," said Njeri Boss, Vice President of Public Relations for Waffle House. But the Waffle House Index also stands for something less obvious.

At 10 a.m., the power came back on, the ceramic waffle irons were plugged in and waffles were added to the menu. The company began tracking Irene 10 days ago, moving ice and eggs to staging sites outside the potential damage zone. Waffle House managers say sales volume can double or triple in the aftermath of a storm. The company, whose annual sales are estimated to exceed $600 million, won’t discuss the costs or benefits of reopening quickly after disasters.

Tips for Creating Vertical Scrolling Webtoons

In most writer-artist partnerships, the illustrator will have an incredible amount of input in the final product. If this were a movie, the artist would be the director, cinematographer production designer, and casting director — and the writer is, unsurprisingly, the writer. How you choose to publish your book will affect how you write and illustrate it, so make sure you pick the right format. (We’ll talk more about how to publish your comic book in the next post of this guide). They held an Art Business Bootcamp at Spectrum Live and  some pretty valuable info came out of that, as these two one-sheets will tell. It is at this stage where you clean-up your drawings and add depth to your illustrations.

The tone of your comic book cover can also change depending on whether the main character is facing the reader, moving across the page, or posing in profile. Try different perspectives too, and see which one works for your story. Discover if vantages from street level view, character close-up, bird’s eye view from above, or looking up from below work. Build a mood board, doodle, and play with ideas or word games to generate ideas. Get back to the basics of things and try to spark your imagination, as comic covers play an essential part in comic book sales. Keep in mind that you want to give purpose to your images and maintain artwork that is balanced, clean, and true to the content of the story.

Change Region

If I am looking to lead the reader from one picture to another or give the feeling that one or more panels are happening either simultaneously or directly after, I will overlap panels. But it’s a difficult trick because you need to make sure that elements of one panel don’t bleed into another panel making it hard to separate the beats of the page. If you’re using BookWright to design your interior pages, now’s the time to add your cover design. This is also the step where you might digitally add text elements, publisher details, or text boxes to your final design.

Knowing your characters a little before you start creating your comic will make it much easier to write. To help get you started, the Kit includes a book - Comics in Action - to help guide and inspire creating your comic book. The guide book goes into a lot of detail and provides numerous examples. Today we're going to look at the process for creating your comic with these 10 Steps. You’ll also need to ensure that there is room to add the other cover elements, as noted in steps 5 and 7. These include title, author, logo, publisher, series number, publication date, price, and barcode.

The symbolic use of color can add layers of meaning to the story. A recurring color might be tied to a specific character, emotion, or theme, creating a subtext that enriches the reader’s experience. Characters should grow and change in response to the story’s events, which adds to the narrative’s energy and keeps readers engaged. This evolution reflects their journey, making them not just a part of the story but the story itself. To create compelling characters, start with their backstory.

Some people prefer to do their storyboards in the size of the finished comic. You might want to try it that way too, to see what works best for you. The comic is a two-page story with a full page cover exclusive to the Xbox Series X, and features Cyclops leading the X-Men in a battle against the Sentinels and Master Mold.

April 24, 2024 US university protests

waffle house index

The popular 24/7 restaurant chain specializing in waffles and other breakfast food rarely closes it doors, often providing food and resources to first responders during natural disasters. The index is green when the local Waffle House is open and serving its full menu; yellow when it's open, but serving a limited menu; and red when it's closed. Those levels then indicate the extent to which a community has power and water. Green means the restaurant is serving a full menu, a signal that damage in an area is limited and the lights are on. Yellow means a limited menu, indicating power from a generator, at best, and low food supplies. Red means the restaurant is closed, a sign of severe damage in the area or unsafe conditions.

(great) Mother’s Day gifts

However, the restaurant really has become shorthand at the highest levels of the American government for predicting how bad a disaster will be, or how much damage a disaster has done to a community. The "Waffle House Index," first coined by Federal Emergency Management Agency Director W. Craig Fugate, is based on the extent of operations and service at the restaurant following a storm and indicates how prepared a business is in case of a natural disaster. For FEMA, the ability to order a plate of smothered and covered hash browns is an important analytic. If a Waffle House is having trouble getting stock, then transportation has been interrupted. If the menu is limited, then it’s possible they have some utilities but not others. If its locations have locked their doors, inclement weather has taken over.

Primary Menu

In March 2020, the Waffle House Index went red as restaurants around the U.S. closed during the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Waffle House closed 21 locations across the state from Naples along the Gulf of Mexico north some 120 miles to Bradenton in Manatee County as a precaution before closing an additional 14 stores. The Waffle House Index is considered accurate in part because it isn’t used to measure specifics but rather to gauge a storm’s impact on a community. What helps its accuracy here is the volume of stores — there are hundreds scattered across the Southeast.

Negotiations at Columbia University unstable, organizers say

One video posted on social media shows a fight between multiple people, one appearing to be one of the victims. While it’s not clear what the fight was about, we know gunshots rang out after. The university closed its campus Wednesday evening as LAPD began arresting demonstrators. Waffle House has also garnered a reputation for being a hotbed of absolute insanity. "There are two signs you need to leave now. Waffle House is closed, and (Jim) Cantore shows up," one X user posted on the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. The index has been used to predict how severely weather will affect an area's accessibility to food, water and essential resources.

“I looked at not only the individual who shot the video but looking at the people in there, those employees, and how they seemed to just be so devastated, overwhelmed,” Dr. James Camm One Community One Voice said. The university "supports free speech through open dialogue that is respectful and constructive," the officials said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing. No matter the reason, Waffle House has developed a cult following. Across its more than 2,100 restaurants in 25 states, Waffle House typically sees annual revenues exceeding $1.3 billion. Beloved for its delicious, cheap food and healthy doses of complete chaos, Waffle House holds a unique place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many Americans.

On top of that, the then newly-reorganized agency's widely-criticized, delayed response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 left many with the impression FEMA was a bumbling (and at worst, carelessly lethal) example of federal inefficiency. In a interview with NBC News on Thursday, Fugate acknowledged that the index "doesn't tell you everything." But he says restaurants labeled red are still a "pretty good gauge" of which areas of a community are impacted the most and need critical attention first. When he was leaving the restaurant, Fugate and his team noticed several cars appeared to be parked at the Starbucks about a block away. But when they got closer, they realized the people weren't there for the coffee.

Waffle House has over 2,000 locations in the U.S., including more than 100 in Florida. FEMA does pay attention to their closures, as it helps them indicate how many people have evacuated from a town. That knowledge helps FEMA decide what they need to do after the storm.

Couple accidentally ships cat from Utah to Southern …

The restaurant chain’s preparedness for natural disasters, which allows its locations to stay open throughout weather crises or open shortly after, has earned it a storm distinction with FEMA. Waffle House restaurants have a reputation for staying open during extreme weather — and for reopening quickly after being forced to close due to tornadoes and hurricanes. If you've lived in Florida for a while, you've probably heard of the "Waffle House Index," which is an informal metric used by emergency officials to measure the severity of a storm. "The Waffle House test just doesn't tell us how quickly a business might rebound — it also tells how the larger community is faring," said a FEMA blog post from 2011, when Craig Fugate was administrator under former president Obama.

FRESH FROM HELL, HILARITY I’m usually up round about the 8 o’clock hour. It’s a longstanding daddy-daughter tradition, always from the smoothie/juice spot right here on my block, Fresh From Hell. If I worked late and am feeling super lazy, I might have it delivered. Other times, I walk down the block in my pajama pants and pick it up. She gets a fresh and fruity açaí bowl; I get a green smoothie with a bunch of stuff in it — flax seeds, matcha protein, ginger, blueberries. The new restaurant is over 4500 square feet with parking, a feat that is hard to come by in this area.

In Hurricane Katrina — when they closed 107 locations in Mississippi and on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain — roads were so bad they stashed supplies in a refrigerated semi-trailer with armed guards, and fuel so scarce they brought in their own tank trucks. When Katrina struck in 2005, Twitter had not yet launched; now Bruner uses it not just to alert customers to closings, but to crowdsource whether roads are open and where the power is on. Waffle House announced Oct. 6 that it was pre-emptively closing some restaurants on a 90-mile stretch of Interstate 95 between Fort Pierce and Titusville in Florida.

If a store like a Home Depot or a Lowe’s or your local hardware store can open, that means people can get the supplies they need in order to rebuild, to clean up the muck and progress along the path to recovery. Businesses in communities are often some of the biggest drivers of recovery. If people can go back to work, they can return to at least one piece of a normal life—and that little piece of normalcy can make a big difference. DAD HAT As of late we’ve been walking to the piers, two blocks away. If it’s raining, she likes to jump in the puddles, much to the chagrin of me in my father hat. When we get back home late morning, we do what I like to think of as the real breakfast, which is delivery from Galaxy Diner.

During Hurricane Irene, Waffle House lost power to 22 restaurants in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. By Wednesday evening, all but one in hard-hit coastal Virginia were back in business. Waffle House Inc. has 1,600 restaurants stretching from the mid-Atlantic to Florida and across the Gulf Coast, leaving it particularly vulnerable to hurricanes. Other businesses, of course, strive to reopen as quickly as possible after disasters.

And finally, a review

Saw tour groups stopping and talking about it across the street but no info was offered to the actual guests of the hotel, which I thought was odd! Guest services is great and so helpful. Every member of the staff was wonderful. Our room was comfortable and quiet, even though our windows faced Broughton Street.

These rooms are located along the inside corridor of The Marshall House with convenient elevator access. This round, the course conditions were excellent and we had a great day. This hotel was highly rated for its very comfy beds. It's a lovely hotel and the service was great. If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

Breakfast was delicious and the location was close to everything. Use the Next and Previous buttons to navigate. Our Accessible King Rooms closely resemble our Classic King guest rooms, but with accessible bathroom features and details.

The hotel was beautiful and very clean. The nightly wine and cheese hours with entertainment were terrific. We liked the fact that there was always complimentary cold bottles of water and a coffee and tea station in the lobby. Built in 1851, this charming 68-room property housed Union soldiers during the Civil War -- and some guests say their spirits still walk the hallways. However, this upper-middle-range property has some of the drawbacks common to old buildings, such as noise issues, small rooms and bathrooms, and few amenities.

Everything was spotless and in great repair. The location is perfect for exploring the historical district. Loved the location, the friendliness of the staff, the comfort of the parlour area and the wine and nibbles reception with entertainment. The waiter serving at this was so nice and welcoming, a credit to the hotel, he was a gentleman. Bedroom was so comfy and immaculately clean. Fun, quirky, and a little bit different, the guest rooms at The Marshall House have a unique style that you just won't find in a new hotel.

City Market is a more diverse and casual version of Riverfront, with lots of live music and vendors selling locally made wares. Afternoon wine and entertainment nice touch. The conditions, like all the courses are excellent and they do a very good job with all the various golf and country club amenities.

There’s a small museum inside the hotel. We're staying at the Marshall house right now. Specially, Dona and our new favorite Cary this will be the second time I booked From ... The Historic District is bordered by the Savannah River and Forsyth Park, and includes the Riverfront and City Market areas. Riverfront is a (somewhat) recently revitalized area, with restaurants, galleries, shops, and bars.

Wonderful location, easy walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants. Nice little room, wonderful staff, excellent breakfast. Nice happy hour with wine and cheese along with a harpist. Did not use valet parking....public parking garage 1/2 block away.

The Marshall House’s original owner was a prominent Savannah woman. Mary M. Marshall opened the original Marshall House in 1851, and she was known as an incredibly successful businesswoman in Savannah’s elite financial and social circles. Today, there’s an 1830s portrait of Mary in the reception area welcoming guests to her hotel. On the hotel's third floor, you'll find a collection of historic artifacts from the original Marshall House.

This Tiny Restaurant Helps Keep Kashmiri Cuisine Alive in Pakistan

It's old and charming and that's really all I need. The rooms are great, clean and homey. It's got a good location near all ... Location is fantastic, which is the only reason I would recommend this hotel. The guest rooms are extremely small for 2 people to not be on top of eachother and in each other’s way.

Amazing hotel, excellent location in Savannah. This place was walking distance to almost every place we wanted to go, including the riverwalk and many ... Staff assisted with printing out boarding pass. This aging gem was opened in 1851 by enterprising innkeeper Mary Marshall, making it the city’s oldest hotel. In the Civil War it served as a hospital, while Joel Chandler Harris, author of the famous “Uncle Remus” stories (of Br’er Rabbit and company), lived here in the late 1860s. If you can afford it, the Broughton Balcony Rooms are the best in the hotel and a real treat, opening out onto the spacious, wrought-iron veranda. Surrounded by restaurants and shopping, short walk to City Market and Riverwalk. I like the idea of staying in a historical bldg, and I would’ve loved to hear the history of it.

Guest can expect their hotel to be one of the stops on some of the ghost tours that travel around Savannah's multiple ghostly stops. If you're looking for a hotel that is haunted, without the extremely haunted feel and look, this is the place. One could easily book this hotel without their family members realizing it's haunted.

We liked the spacious one bedroom suite with view to an internal court where breakfast was served. Classical ambience with luxury details. Historic hotel with good and comfortble reception. Bottles of water, coffee and tea were complimentary, as well as a drink every evening. Central location and historical significance. Loved the wine and cheese evenings with quiz or live music.

The Marshall House is the oldest operating hotel in Savannah and has an authentic atmosphere that's not to be missed. Built in 1851, the hotel was occupied by Union troops led by General Sherman at the end of the Civil War, and was a hospital during two Yellow Fever epidemics. Savannah's charming Historic District is filled with numerous parks and well-kept, architecturally-stunning historic buildings. Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply. Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.7 for a two-person trip.

Disney Magic Dining: Restaurants & Food on Cruise Critic

Dinner at Enchanted Garden is three courses, with appetizers like lobster ravioli or a curried carrot and apple soup. The sea bass on the entree menu is a favorite of mine and is always cooked to perfection. Polish off the meal with a piece of chocolate torte or a banana sundae.

Disney Cruise Palo

On the Fantasy the snacks are found from 10.45 until midnight in La Piazza. You can order specialty smoothies here for an additional charge. However, dining at Remy is an experience which you really should indulge in at least once in a lifetime.

When you book through The Vacationeer, you get a generous Disney onboard credit. This bonus gives you up to $1000 of free spending money on your cruise, just for booking with a premier Disney travel agency like The Vacationeer. As a top-ranked Diamond-Level Earmarked Disney Vacation Planner Agency, they provide tailored advice and booking assistance for a smooth Disney Cruise experience. They can answer your questions about Specialty Dining, help with dining reservations, and update you about the latest Disney Cruise Line itineraries.

Your Dining Team on Disney Cruise Line

It is one of the most popular (although Tiana’s Place and Rapunzel’s Royal Table are now pretty close in the popularity stakes). For example, all the Animator’s Palate menus are the same whichever ship that you dine on. Royal Court, Royal Palace, and Triton’s also have the same menu. This is the only restaurant that is available on all of the Disney ships. They will put tables together so that you can be seated together.

We Ate EVERYTHING on Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship — The Disney Wish

The prix-fixe menu at Remy is $135, and there's also an a la carte menu. The Champagne brunch at Enchante is a prix-fixe meal paired with a glass of Champagne, while Just Desserts is a five-course dessert menu served with some of the best coffee on the ship. Breakfast here is fairly basic but more relaxing than hitting the buffet line.

Rotational Dining

Petites Assiettes de Remy is available for a charge of $50 per person and this includes the wine pairing. Your Brunch experience then continues when you will be taken into the Remy restaurant with a group of your fellow diners. There can’t be many restaurants named after a rat, but Disney always does things slightly differently. One of the most popular Palo desserts is the melting chocolate cake.

Local food vendors at various ports of call might serve up dishes like jerk chicken in Jamaica, roti in Barbados, or conch fritters in the Bahamas. If your itinerary includes a stop in Mexico, take advantage of the chance to savor authentic tacos or enchiladas. Whether you’re savoring your meal with your toes in the sand or enjoying a fruity drink at the adults-only Serenity Bay, Castaway Cay offers a delicious taste of the tropics. Every meal becomes a highlight of the day, bringing the excitement of a new setting combined with the comfort of familiar faces in our serving team. For my wife and I, the variety offered by Rotational Dining transforms each meal into its own unique adventure. Keep in mind, though, that gratuities are not included in the cost of a Disney cruise, and this applies to both the included and extra-cost meals.

The Petites Assiettes de Remy is hosted by the Executive Chef and the Sommelier of Remy. It is only available on the first day of your Disney cruise sailing and is held in the early evening. Many people, including me, prefer Palo Brunch over Palo dinner.

With every Disney rotational dining restaurant, the servers have a different costume. The Royal Palace is one of the rotational dining restaurants on the Disney Dream. In addition to the standard menus in each Disney cruise restaurant, they have some special menus which are served on certain itineraries. There will be members of the Kids Club team waiting in the restaurant at a certain time to take your children to the club once they have finished eating.

Kids can join in the final celebration and march around the restaurant conga line-style as they wave flags and sing along to "Love is an Open Door" with the dining room service team. Our Disney cruise food guide has all you need to know about dining options across the cruise line's fleet, including where to find them and whether they cost extra or are included in your fare. We also answer some of the most popular questions about dining and food on Disney Cruise Line. Each dining venue on the ship features diverse menu options, many of which are suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and those with food allergies or intolerances. Guests with special dietary needs can expect to find a variety of tasty dishes, from fresh salads and grilled vegetables to unique plant-based entrees.

Quick-service dining on Disney Cruise Line offers guests the convenience of fast, delicious meals and snacks throughout the day. With a variety of locations serving everything from burgers and pizza to sandwiches and salads, there is something for everyone. Palo is an adults-only restaurant with a semi-formal dress code. The restaurants are elegant and the overall quality of the food is top-notch.

The specialty dining venues on Disney cruises offer a peaceful, adult-only escape amidst the bustling cruise activities. Exceptional service, thoughtful theming, and gourmet cuisine set these dining experiences apart on any Disney cruise. Speaking from personal experience, my wife and I believe these extraordinary moments justify the additional expense and the need to dress up just a bit.

disney cruise line food

It shares many dishes with the Royal Court and Royal Palace on the Dream and Fantasy. When the Disney Wish launches in 2022 there will be a Frozen-themed restaurant. One of my very favorite Disney movies is Tangled so this has to be one of my favorite restaurants. This restaurant is all about getting the diners involved in the immersive experience. If you are sailing on the Disney Fantasy or the Disney Dream take some time to walk around the restaurant and look at the numerous shelves of animation memorabilia. Animator’s Palate is the only restaurant that is on all four of the ships.

Whether it’s the sparkle in a child’s eyes when they see their favorite princess or the excitement of a Frozen-themed feast, these experiences are thrilling for kids and adults alike. There are two specialty restaurants on board the Disney ships, which serve dinner and brunch. Palo is located on all four ships, while Remy is only available on the Dream and Fantasy. Both Palo and Remy are adult-exclusive, and offer an exceptional dining experience at an additional fee. The restaurant is divided into two dining rooms named after Walt and his brother Roy, though both serve the same menu, which celebrates California cuisine.

The flavors do change daily, so check out what's mixing in the machines each day. Near Disney Wish's main pool is Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods. This outdoor open-air concept is made up of five smaller quick-service windows dishing out barbecue, pizza, burgers, tacos and ice cream. My favorite is Donald's Cantina, which is a make-your-own Tex-Mex spot with plenty of base, protein and topping options, along with a nearby salsa and hot sauce bar.

The farther in advance you can book your Alaskan cruise, the more options you will have for cruise dates, itineraries, and cabin amenities. July and August are considered peak seasons to cruise to Alaska for good reason. These are the months when all good things combine to create the optimal Alaskan experience. June is a smart choice for cruisers who don’t want to travel during peak season but want more opportunities. If you cruise to Alaska in June, you can expect warmer and drier temperatures, fewer children onboard, increased wildlife sightings, and more cruise offerings. You’ve got about a 50/50 chance of getting rained or snowed on during excursions.

Here's what you need to know about which months are best to cruise Hawaii. For these reasons, September is the worst month of the year to take a cruise. April and May are excellent times to go because they are outside of the hurricane season, although some Caribbean destinations see more rainfall than normal in May.

You'll want to book well in advance for an Alaska cruise between June and August, as itineraries tend to sell out quickly. The best time to cruise Australia is from late November to March, when late spring crests into Australia's summer months. Major ports of call like Sydney, Adelaide and Perth will be quite warm and sunny, while Cairns in the northeast -- the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef -- will be steamy and hot. In this post, I share a month-by-month guide about the best time of year for an Alaskan cruise.

HAWAII

New Zealand's beaches are also a top attraction in the summer, along with outdoor activities and water sports. A seven-night sailing from Boston to Montreal in May 2024 with Holland America starts at $779 per person. A similar seven-night itinerary from Boston to Quebec City in late September starts at $1,279 per person. The summer months are also the best time to see several species of whales off the coast of Newfoundland, including humpback whales. The cruise season in Canada and New England begins in May and ends in October, with a few ships even making the voyage in April. You'll find more ships in this region between August and October as it gets closer to peak leaf-peeping season.

What to Do in Alaska: Top Things to Do in October

To get the best price for a Canada/New England cruise in May or October. There are rarely sailings beyond these timeframes due to cold weather and the chance of snow or rain. For the best deals, cruise during the fall - September and October - along with May and June. This can also be the optimal time for whale watching, which is a popular activity. Hurricane season can have some impacts on the region, although not as common as in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Cruise in July or August: Chances of Rain and Lots of Families

To help you find the best time to cruise to Alaska, Cruise Critic is breaking down the Alaska cruise season month by month to help you plan your bucket-list trip. Read on for average Alaska cruise prices, things to do in Alaska and everything else you'll need to decide which is the best month to cruise Alaska for you. The Alaska cruise season is a little over six months long, but choosing the best time to cruise Alaska is surprisingly not that simple. By late spring, summer and fall, there are more festivals, sporting events and golf tournaments that bring visitors to the islands. In the summertime, you'll have family vacations and people with vacation homes in Bermuda returning for the season and warmer weather.

Taking a Cruise in April

With kids back in school, there is less demand for cruising during these periods. A 5-night cruise onboard Carnival Sunshine, for instance, starts at $364 per person in May 2024. The price for the same cruise increases to $599 per person in July 2024. Bahamas weather in April starts to warm up and is still part of the high season.

How Much Cruise Lines Spend on Food (Less Than You Think?)

We've compiled the best times to cruise to the most popular cruise destinations based on the weather, lowest prices and fewer crowds. July and August can be the most expensive months to cruise the Caribbean, but there are plenty of exceptions. Because more and more ships sail the region every year, prices can be competitive for families, couples and friends planning their summer getaway. The cheapest time for Caribbean cruises runs from late summer into fall, when hurricane season is at its peak. If this is the only chance you have to cruise, keep in mind that itineraries can change or be canceled depending on the weather.

The cruise season in the Mediterranean usually begins in April and ends in November, with peak season falling between June and September. Unlike cruising to the Caribbean, winter is the rainier season, and summer sees the least amount of rain. Despite this, winter is peak time for cruises to Hawaii, along with many land based vacationers. This is also an ideal time for nature lovers as thousands of humpback whales visit the waters around the islands as part of annual migration patterns. It is also a great time to explore the lush terrain of Hawaii, including its legendary waterfalls, beaches and epic surfing waves. Tourists flock to Europe in the summer, but the best time for a European cruise is in the late spring and early fall.

One 2016 study by CruiseWatch.com found that, on average, cruise fares dropped the most on Thursdays. These data points are constantly fluctuating so your best bet is to track fares throughout the week. If you have your sights set on a high-demand sailing — on a new ship or during school holiday dates — the best time to book a cruise will be as soon as fares are released. This is the only way to guarantee a spot (and secure a particular cabin location).

If that sounds like too much math homework, I recommend that you call a travel agent. A cruise-knowledgeable travel adviser can help you plan your trip and determine if the current pricing is good or if you should hold out for a deal. Within a given cruise sale's promotional period, I've seen cabin prices fluctuate daily and I've seen them stay the same for a week. It all depends on how many cabins a cruise line has allocated for a specific fare class and whether those rooms happen to sell out or not. While holding off may result in a once-in-a-lifetime deal, keep in mind that your cabin and category choices may be minimal and there's no guarantee you'll be able to book at all.

If I were to narrow it down even further, I'd say the best time to cruise to the Caribbean is early December. It's a fun way to create a break between Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Australia Day celebrations can also draw crowds, so be aware if your itinerary includes that January holiday.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget. If you're seeking a slightly cheaper river cruise in Europe, spring can mean flowers in glorious bloom and milder temperatures. Tulip-viewing itineraries in the Netherlands and Belgium are especially popular.

You'll now find these zones on Caribbean-focused vessels like Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Prima. Each of these solo cruiser zones, which are unrepeated in the industry for now, includes dozens of cabins for solo travelers, all clustered around each other. There is also a private lounge with a bar and television where solos can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Except for the weeks that include holidays, ships aren't likely to be at capacity or filled with screaming children. Fares in winter are a bit below the yearly average (excluding the holiday weeks, which are often the highest of the year). Look particularly at last-minute options and those first two weeks in December.
